Project: Freedom Communications mobile strategy

In November 2009 I was selected to be one of four people working on a Freedom Communications mobile team. Our team was given 90 days to develop and refine a strategy and to build an action plan on achieving that strategy. Each person was given a role on the team and I was appointed to keep the team organized and on task. In February 2010 the strategy was approved by Freedom management. My work on the mobile team led to my role as the Orange County Register mobile and social leader.

Somewhat similar to a weather map I created, I used some in-between project time to build a multi-layered earthquake map.

This is, from what I could find at the time, the only Google map that contains accurate fault locations, historical earthquake data and live-streaming recent earthquakes. To create the map I hunted down all the data, edited some layers in Google Earth, and fed in some information to Google Maps via Google Spreadsheet mapper and built the multi-layered map.

While working on large projects I have the time to work on special side projects. One of my favorite things to do is build interesting maps based on proven reader interest.

I used a Google Maps API tool to build this multi-layer automatically refreshing weather map for Orange County. The map is a resource for our audience looking up the weather and for Register journalists looking to find information about the current weather.

Project: OC Register Wiki

As part of my work on the Orange County communities project I was the leader of developing an Orange County wiki. The wiki is intended to add depth and context to the people, places, things and trends of the county. The content is written by the community along with Orange County Register staff.

The O.C. Register Wiki began in Irvine and is expanding to include all of Orange County. I started working on the wiki in February 2009 and the wiki launched on July 20, 2009. In November 2009 I handed the wiki reigns over to Roxanne Hack so that I could join and work on the Freedom Communications mobile team.

For this project I: developed a strategy and action plan, reviewed vendors to finally select MindTouch as the wiki vendor, created a business plan, learned DekiScript (the API language for MindTouch wikis) so that I could automate sections in the wiki, created a user engagement plan, taught and managed staff’s contributions to the wiki, managed user-engagement and management, created a site structure and design and managed up by keeping OCRegister and Freedom leaders up-to-date on the wiki progress.

I was working a weekend cops desk shift when a small brush fire started in the Cleveland National Forest. No matter how small a brush fire starts a news organization should be alert because all fires start small. Thankfully this fire was extinguished after a few hours, but at least we were prepared to cover the story if the fire got out of hand.
